HIV-1 infection can result in a decrease of CD4 T, an increase in CD8T cells, and a decrease in CD4:CD8 ratio, and a progressive destruction to immune function. In HIV-1 seropositive patients, enumeration of CD4 T cells may be used for prognostic purposes as well as to monitor disease progression and antiretroviral therapy.
